I’m amazed that You write such original content every week. I read hundred stories per week between, Bloomberg, research, twitter. But everytime I get on my box this email I get excited. 🙏 thanks for this insightful thinking. Pedro Rebordão.

It looks more like the old Playbook of Kosovo, Libya, flooding Europe with North Africans, the South American migrants driven into the US etc. By Sunday night the Sanctions on Iran will be lifted.

For some reason every time the people that really pull the strings and we know who they are, displace millions of people by reneging on previously negotiated agreements. To me it looks more like a gigantic cover up of a virus release, vaccine injury scam and the search for a scape goat to blame the soon to follow unraveling of the global financial system on. I am no fan of Putin by any means, but I like the people that run the WEF/UN/IMF that are calling the shots even less.

While you make your heartfelt points, with respect, I think you haven't grasped the real reason for this "invasion". Please give your time to this 18 minute explanation of Russia's reason for being in Ukraine, explained by an American businessman living in Kiev and uploaded from a hotel room in Kiev last Saturday, while awaiting the "assault" on that city. I was impressed by his eloquence and his grasp of the situation and understanding of the goal of this military/police initiative by the Russian military. It made complete sense to me because it comes from an outsider, an American, no less, who seems, to me, totally sane. Please review this link and report back to your subscribers of whom I am one who seeks truth and freedom of choice. Alan.

The analogy here what i see is that $US has the Dead Man's Switch. Sanctions after sections, confiscation of reserves and even cancelling accounts of bitcoin holders because of ethnicity.

Who is going walk the dollar down the 'golden bridge' ?

Putin is like - go a head pull the cord, i've got oil/gas/food/electricity/ and pay for them in rubles.

Couldn't agree more Dr. Pippa! I have my own take from a few days ago that echoes your points, especially about the Suwalki Gap. We're staring down the unthinkable and we don't even know it.

Another brilliant article. Again, I wish the current admin possessed your clear thinking. Here is my question: No one knows for sure whether Putin’s nuclear threats are mere bluster. But I believe recent events may provide a tell; here’s how: A significant radiation leak at the Ukraine nuclear plant would significantly impact Russia, due to its proximity. If the alleged, recent Russian shelling of that facility (presumably authorized by Putin) posed a bona fide possibility of causing a significant radiation leak, then Putin has (literally) thrown caution to the wind; he cares not about the radioactive repercussions to Russia. So, I’m wondering if anyone has done a deep dive into the risks posed by Russia’s alleged shelling activity at the Ukraine nuclear facility? Thank you 🙏🏽

This could be describing Cheney and Iraq.

I see here a disappointing lack of understanding, to the point of disconnect from objective reality, a fantasy of a convenient re-run of a cold war script, which is why diplomacy utterly failed, with situation now worse than at any point during the cold war. Putin burnt the metaphorical ships, for himself and Russia, after 20 years of trying to get along with the west, and now he has no plans or interest in going back to the place the west prepared for Russia. He broke Russia away from the western world, and left the West behind in its bubble. This is where things are now, the result of the inescapable cold war mindset taken to its logical end.

Quite an interesting angle. Still, being not a military expert I would say some of the grounds for praising Russian military power like 'Russia now has hypersonic and Thermobaric missiles that the West has no known defenses against.' is much exxagerated. Hypersonic missiles which were publicly advertised by putin 'net analogov v mire' public show with animations? Ok, maybe there is something behind what could fly. Thermobaric missiles, first used in Afganistan war by soviets is counted for a military advance? Pardon my French...

He just needs his bluff called. Nuke all Russian city’s right now, that will solve it all. Then Russia will be a big nuclear wasteland with a gas pipe running from it. Job done.

Decent overview but a little biased as if Russia is some evil empire. You make it sound as if wars are OK as long as the threat of nukes are NOT involved. Let's not mention Iraq, Afghanistan or Yemen.

Informative and useful as always.

I hope you are correct about the Russian public. However, I think the situation there mirrors the US with a huge cognitive dissonance affecting the national psyche. Many Russians already distrust the west and have something of a siege mentality. Who knows how many really believe that Putin is acting against Nazi's in Ukraine and NATO. This hardening of opinion in favour of action towards Russia's enemies is fuel to Putin's narcissism (Note: Not all Narcissists are Psychopaths but all psychopaths are narcissists) and Putin becomes not just President but Cult leader....lets just hope its not a death cult!

Following these writing tracking the situation in Europe has been extremely eye opening, thank you for such great information. Peace again seems to be the best option for everyone. Individuals specifically.. Years of centralization has created a power vacuum at the top. Which each step being more drastic for them to achieve their means. Everyone at the expense of individual people. Deescaltion solves everything, regardless that escalation got us here. Individuals are finally realizing the power they have to enact change. The ball is moving, hopefully it can continue in the right court.

Pippa, you lay out a great prescription for solving this. But what chance is there that Biden and his people can execute?

As your father has publicly mentioned several times, the current White House team is not the A or B team. Is there anyone in a senior cabinet level position or running the NSC who has real combat experience? At least during the Cuban missile crisis JFK and many of his advisors had seen the worst war has to offer, so had a better understanding of the stakes.

What hope do we have that the current White House national security team will handle this any better than they handled Afghanistan?

I wonder if Putin watched Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein's endings and is now considering exiting in a blaze of glorious light followed by a mushroom cloud rather than be humiliated. He wants to control the story. He does not care about human life other than his own. As noted in the post, the primary hope may rest in the decisions of the Russians who will be faced with the reality of following orders and procedures that lead to nuclear warfare.
