Check this out! "Inside the space hotel scheduled to open in 2025" https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/space-hotel-orbital-assembly-scn/index.html. Space tourism!! Brought to you by Orbital Assembly https://orbitalassembly.com/ . “If we are going to have large numbers of people experience the Overview Effect over long periods of time, we are going to need to have the right kind of infrastructure established throughout the solar ecosystem. That’s where OAC comes in and that’s why their mission is so important to our future.”

Frank White, OAC advisor &

author of The Overview Effect

As a space development company, Orbital Assembly Corporation constructs, develops and manages gravity capable space platforms on orbit, in cislunar space, and throughout the solar system; enabling society to work, play, and thrive in the space ecosystem.

Attack typos! No worries, we know it was just the aliens messing with you. You’re getting too close literally and figuratively, Pippa. :)

Fascinating ideas and information, as always from your pen, Pippa! Thanks!

I wonder how much consideration is being given to (or even merited by?) the concern some have expressed about 'micrometeorites'. I understand micrometeorites can do quite a bit of damage to things up there in space - even tho' they're tiny, they're often moving at very high velocities. And solar panels necessarily present a large "attack surface", so micrometeorites might do quite a lot of damage to the proposed solar energy-gathering systems. Not to mention the additional dangers of both solar and extra-solar radiation/ particle bursts.

Also, apparently construction on Mars is a step closer now that they've figured out how to make bricks using astronaut urine and Mars dust. You can't make this up! Human settlements on Mars are one step closer after scientists created ‘space bricks’.

"These could be created on the Red Planet by mixing astronauts’ urine with the dusty Martian soil.

The bricks are made by mixing dust with urea, the main compound in urine, and bacteria as well guar gum and nickel chloride.

The slurry can be poured into moulds of any shape and over a few days the bacteria convert the urea into calcium carbonate crystals."

Huge fan of your writings Dr. Pippa. An even greater fan of the optimism you share here, after a couple of gloomy posts. Looking forward to part 2.

One claim I'd like to challenge, after reading a bunch of Vaclav Smil

> It sounds to me like the end of fossil fuels

You seem to consider only energy here. Thinking about Smil's 4 pillars of civilisation (Ammonia, Cement, Steel, Plastics) I simply cannot see how solar power from space can help with getting rid of fossil fuels. What am I missing?

Very interesting read. We have been stuck with fossil fuels for so long that many became blind to new possibilities. Hopefully the tide is turning.
